Naarm/Melbourne artist REDD. returns with “better,” a hazy, guitar-driven new single that captures the blurred emotions of escaping reality for one more night. Released ahead of their headline show in Amsterdam, the track also arrives with the announcement of REDD.’s forthcoming project, heaven’s here, due November 20.
Built around fuzzed-out guitars, infectious hooks, and a restless blend of punk, rap, and electronic influences, “better” explores the complicated relationship between escapism and responsibility. What initially began as a carefree party track in late 2025 gradually took on a much heavier emotional meaning as REDD. worked through a turbulent period in their personal life.
The track was recorded in London with acclaimed producer Dan Carey, known for his work with artists including Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C., and Geese. That collaboration helped transform the song from its original party-minded concept into something more emotionally layered.
REDD. explains, “I was dealing with a lot personally, and the pub became this strange place of comfort and escape. ‘better’ is about that feeling of wanting to outrun reality, even if only for a night.”
The song’s cheeky central hook — “If you like me now, I’m better when I’m f*cked up” — distills the reckless optimism and fleeting freedom of late nights into a single line. Beneath its infectious energy, however, “better” reflects the darker impulses that can accompany trying to escape difficult circumstances.
As the second preview from heaven’s here, the single offers another glimpse into the project’s deeply personal world. Across the upcoming release, REDD. draws from punk, rap, and electro while using intimate songwriting to explore gender, sexuality, grief, love, escapism, and the uncertainties of coming of age.
The project was initially imagined as something designed to provide an escape for listeners. Instead, circumstances surrounding its creation forced REDD. to confront the same need for escape personally.
REDD. recalls, “I remember before I went to write and record ‘heaven’s here’ I wanted it to be a party, an escape for people. The week leading up to my writing trip for the project I had a difficult series of events followed by me and my girlfriend at the time breaking up. Life got very heavy, very fast. And now I needed an escape from something. That’s what heaven’s here became.”
That shift ultimately shaped the project’s emotional core. What began as an idea for a party record evolved into a body of work centered on rebuilding, identity, grief, and self-discovery.
“To me ‘heaven’s here’ is about identity, grief and self discovery,” REDD. continues. “I felt as if I had gone all the way back to square one and had to be build myself back up again. It was an incredibly difficult time of my life and there were many times where I found myself escaping and coping through substances and lust.”
The result is a project that embraces contradiction: euphoric but bruised, chaotic but deeply reflective, and built around the tension between wanting to disappear and finding a way to move forward. REDD. describes the project as a “4k snapshot” of their life, capturing the experimentation, self-expression, and self-discovery that define a formative period.
With “better,” REDD. turns that tension into an immediate, hook-heavy rush while continuing to reveal the more vulnerable story behind heaven’s here. The new project promises to expand on the artist’s increasingly genre-fluid approach while documenting a period of significant personal transformation.
