Kamloops, British Columbia, may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think about hubs for electronic music events and festivals, but the team at Hi, Society Entertainment is making waves and successfully changing that perspective in Western Canada. Founded over half a decade ago by Nik Marshall and a dedicated group of creators, Hi, Society was born out of a love for music, sound system culture, and the growing electronic music community in Western Canada. Owner and operator, Kellan Sandhu, and his team of over 20 talented sound technicians, stage designers, DJs, producers, artists, vendors, and promoters work collectively year-round to produce high-quality club events as well as an annual festival held just outside Kamloops every August. This year the lineup boasted heavy hitters Mat The Alien, Abstrakt Sonance, ColtCuts, Chuurch, Ben Fox, Neon Steve, international acts Phibes and Joe Nice, and a slew of up and coming Canadian artists, all the while providing attendees with 100’000 watts of PK Sound.
While the annual festival is definitely the shining star of the collectives work over the years, most weekends you can find Kellan and his lead sound technician Zac Davis, hauling their PK sound system from Kamloops to events all over Western Canada. The company provides not only the physical PK sound system but also lends their skills in sound technicians, stage management, and stage design to a wide variety of events. In the past, Hi, Society has been hired out by well-known festivals such as Fozzy Fest, Electric Love, Curiosity Music Festival, and this year they had the opportunity to show what they were made of at Canada’s leading boutique festival, Bass Coast, held in Merritt, BC.
The mission of Hi, Society Entertainment, according to Kellan, is to build the Electronic music scene in Kamloops by bringing together like-minded individuals to create, express, and bring to fruition their artistic and music-related goals as a collective community. These guys are the definition of the rise and grind. The result is an expertly integrated experience for attendees that encompasses sound, design, art, and community wrapped up into one hell of a good time. It is a labour of love and collaborative efforts between designers, visionaries, DJs, producers, performers, and overall event production wizards, all to bring forth some of the best shows you can find between the Pacific Ocean and the Icefields Parkway. Some of their most notable successes would have to include their sold-out show in the Spring of 2019 with headliners Mat The Alien and The Librarian, as well as the ever-growing size of Hi, Society Festival, increasing in size by nearly 100 people each year. 2019 blew the minds of nearly 800 ravers and next year is already in the works. The list of artists that have graced the Hi, Society roster is extensive, including a wide variety of incredible talent, to name a few; Khiva, Kytami, Long Walk Short Dock, Truth, D Double E, Leo Zen, Cartoon Network, Whiprek, Daliance, and the list goes on. Each line up is hand-curated by Kellan and his team, DJs need not apply, Hi, Society comes to you! With each event debuting a new stage designed by Simone Gentry, Danelle Adams-Chow and Harrison Ross, plus rock star stagehands Travis Briere and Ben Peacock on deck at all times, these events are just as fun for artists as they are for attendees.
When asked about Hi, Society Entertainment, Kellan will not hesitate to put his team and their efforts above all else when it comes to the success of the brand. “I think about the opportunity to bring together friends and strangers alike to showcase the diverse talents that Kamloops has to offer…to watch them learn and grow together while being supported by, and building, the community”. There’s no doubt about it, Hi, Society is a team effort, and the hard work continues to pay off. Kellan and his team plan to expand the scope of Hi, Society to include lighting and visuals, and of course, as much PK Sound as possible, in the coming years. They hope to continue working with more festivals, putting an emphasis on helping younger festivals grow. Ultimately, Hi, Society Entertainment, through its club events, festival, hired-out technician, design, and stage management services, want to keep increasing Kamloops notoriety to the point where DJs, producers, and creators, know that this community is one in which they can grow and prosper.
You can see for yourself what Hi, Society is all about at their October 26th show, featuring one of the pioneers of Electronic Dub and Reggae, Radikal Guru, all the way from Poland. The line-up also includes Toronto artist Distinct Motive, Handsome Tiger from Vancouver, and a rare and not-to-be-missed appearance from Hi, Societys’ own, Kellan-It. The event is hosted by the charming Leo Zen, and will include intelligent light and lasers from Ora Laser, visual entertainment provided by Scuba Steve, and custom stage design by Sees Destiny, Heavy Mellow Movements, and Product of a Broken Pencil. To add to the already packed event, live art and vendors will be there for your viewing and shopping pleasure, and you can trust that over 20’000 watts of infamous PK Sound will be fired up and vibrating through your entire being. Tickets are available on Showpass, through the event page on Facebook, or hand-delivered by one of the many Hi, Society team members in Kamloops or Kelowna.
