Sometimes you find an artist that completely flips your world upside down. Their music is like your soul in MP3 format. I’ve had very few artists impact my life as deeply as Nora En Pure has. I call her my musical anti-anxiety prescription, she can take me from panic to peaceful in 30 seconds. Whether it’s her productions or her weekly podcast Purified, if I’m having a bad day, she will fix it every time. Music has the ability to take us out of the now and carry us elsewhere to places that aren’t bogged down with demands or pressure. Nora’s music has an even more enhanced effect because so much of her music has natural sounds and saga-like, take-you-on-a-journey elements. Nora En Pure has been one of the reigning queens of Deep House since 2013 when she first began having hit after hit charting on the Beatport Top 100 Deep House Tracks. I first discovered her after I MISSED her set at Shambhala Music Festival in 2016. I still get bummed when I think about how amazing she would have been in that setting (Hey Shambhala Gods, give a girl a second chance in 2020? Preferably at the Living Room Stage?). Her Purified Podcast was still in its early days, and I clued into her magic right around episode 38. Every Monday a new episode goes up on her SoundCloud, and as I write this, I’m listening to Purified #168. I’ve listened to every episode, every week, for 4 years – and I still haven’t gotten bored.
If you know Nora En Pure’s sound, you can’t deny the deeply soothing and emotional atmosphere it creates. In her podcast, you’ll hear Funk, Progressive, Deep, Soul, and Tech House. Her mixing is flawless, and hearing her sound ebb and flow over the years has been something only someone as obsessed as I am can truly appreciate. I’ve met a few Nora lovers over the years, and even though her following is exploding in size right now, when you run in to someone who’s been there since nearly day one, you don’t even need to verbalize how important her music is to you, we just get it through a nearly spiritual connection. I probably sound insane saying that but we all know music transcends the senses into something much harder to put into words, and Nora En Pure does that without fail. Her podcast often features artists like Lane 8, Eelke Kleijn, Monolink, Sons Of Maria, Passenger 10, all the way to Dosem, Dom Dolla, and Camelphat. Her sound covers a vast array of genres, which gives her the ability to cover so much ground in one 60 minute mix.
Nora En Pure is one part South African, one part Swiss, one part everywhere else. Her sound encompasses energy from all over the world and her latest EP Homebound which dropped on October 25th beautifully represents her roots from both Europe and South Africa. One thing you can count on in Nora’s music is stunning piano lines and chakra shaking bass lines, add in some ethereal organic sounds like whale calls, birds, or the sound of the ocean, and you’ve got yourself a sure-fire Nora En Pure heater. I’ve never heard a Nora track I didn’t love, and when she releases new music it’s like Christmas morning over and over. If you are extremely lucky, you may have seen her actually play the piano during her live sets (if so I envy you to my core) and it just further cements her incredible talent as a composer, producer, and DJ.
Nora En Pure is rising faster than ever, and 2019 has arguably been one of her biggest years yet. She gives you a quick recap of where shes been and where she’s going in each podcast, this girl is always on the go, often playing two gigs in one night, and up to 4 in one weekend! It’s hard to keep up with where she is, but she is always in good company at her events. The last year or so has been full of her own Purified events, hitting cities like Zurich, Prague, Brooklyn, San Fransisco, and more. November 15th will be the last Purified event of 2019, and the lucky city of Montreal will be hosting Nora, Return of the Jaded, Jody Wisternoff, and Martin Ikin inside DSTKRT. On top of creating events, releasing a new EP every six months or so, recording a podcast every week, November 22nd will mark the launch of Nora En Pures imprint label Purified. No word yet on what the first release will be, however, she did drop us a teaser video on her Instagram last week.
Nora’s music has been by my side through thick or thin since 2016, and I owe her basically every blissful music-related moment I’ve had since. You can’t talk house with me without listening to me gush about this incredible woman, and more and more friends are joining me in getting Purified every week. Each podcast averages around 10’000 plays within a week of its release, and now with the label launch, I can’t wait to see Nora keep climbing the charts and changing people’s lives through music. I’ve included my top 10 Nora En Pure tracks below, go get Purified, freaks.
