Australian songwriter and producer Callum MacDonald, widely recognized as a core member of daste., steps into a new creative chapter this week with the release of his debut solo EP Dreaming In Colour, arriving under his Monsieur Mellow moniker.
The project marks the culmination of an 18-month period of personal and artistic exploration, building on the foundation laid by earlier singles including “Paris Strut,” the Taj Ralph-assisted “Slow Down,” and “Roll River, Roll” featuring Jackson James Smith. With the full EP now revealed, listeners are introduced to its centerpiece, the title track “Dreaming In Colour,” a defining statement of the project’s sonic identity.
Anchored in a refined blend of soulful vocal sampling, warm brass arrangements, and a slow-burning rhythmic pulse, “Dreaming In Colour” captures the essence of Monsieur Mellow’s sound. The track balances introspection with movement, designed to resonate equally in solitary moments and within the shared energy of a dancefloor setting.
Reflecting on the journey behind the EP, Callum MacDonald shares:
“The journey of Dreaming In Colour has been a lesson in trusting my intuition. I’ve always known I wanted to create my own music—something I could build, shape, and truly call my own—but for a long time I couldn’t quite define what that would sound or look like.
Over the past 18 months, everything has started to fall into place. By stripping things back and following my instincts, I’ve felt a real sense of reward, both personally and creatively. The music I’ve made reflects where I’m at in life, and in the same way, I feel like the best parts of me have come through in the process. I’m enjoying it all—not just the end result, but the process of getting there.
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with such talented artists as Jackson James Smith and Taj Ralph, and I feel genuinely grateful to have them be part of this project. I’m excited to continue growing the Monsieur Mellow world through future collaborations, but right now, I feel like I’m truly living my dream in colour.”
With Dreaming In Colour, Callum MacDonald establishes Monsieur Mellow as more than a side project—it’s a fully realized artistic identity rooted in intention, texture, and emotional clarity, signaling a compelling new direction beyond his work with daste.
