Alternative K-pop collective Balming Tiger has announced their upcoming album Gongbu, set for release on May 19, arriving alongside the unveiling of new single “Home.” Serving as the first window into the project’s sonic direction, the track blends psychedelic textures and retro band elements with the tonal sensibilities of Korean and broader East Asian music. Featuring contributions from members bj wnjn, sogumm, Mudd the student, Lee Suho, and San Yawn, “Home” explores the concept of belonging through a fragmented, personal lens, with each artist offering their own interpretation of what “home” represents.

Far from a conventional album rollout, Gongbu is conceived as a fully immersive, narrative-driven project. At its core is the fictional framework of “Gongbu Korea,” a surreal research institute where experimental technologies are used to observe and document human dreams and the unconscious. This conceptual backbone allows Balming Tiger to extend their creative vision beyond music, integrating film, visual art, and performance into a unified universe.

The music video for “Home,” co-directed by group members Jan’ Qui and San Yawn, leans into this narrative approach. Presented as a black comedy inspired by “Hamjinabi,” a traditional Korean wedding custom, the video unfolds within the dream of sogumm, who appears as a test subject within the “Gongbu Korea” system. The visual not only reflects the album’s central theme of dreams but also introduces key environments and characters, laying the groundwork for the project’s unfolding storyline.

Visually, the album continues this layered world-building. The cover artwork features six core members—Omega Sapien, sogumm, Mudd the student, bj wnjn, Leesuho, and Unsinkable—whose identities anchor the group’s genre-defying sound. Created in collaboration with artist Keem Dohyeong, the imagery reinforces the collective’s experimental ethos. Meanwhile, the single artwork for “Home” references the former main building of Jeju National University, originally designed by renowned architect Kim Chung-up. Though the structure has since been demolished, it is reimagined here as the headquarters of the fictional “Gongbu Korea,” further blurring the line between reality and the group’s constructed universe.

The release of Gongbu follows a steady evolution for Balming Tiger, whose debut album January Never Dies in 2023 and 2024 EP Greatest Hits established them as one of the most boundary-pushing acts in the global alternative pop landscape. In 2025, the collective expanded their international footprint through collaborations with artists including ATARASHII GAKKO!, Yaeji, Haruomi Hosono, and IU, alongside work with NHK.

With “Home” setting the tone, Gongbu positions Balming Tiger at the intersection of experimental music, visual storytelling, and conceptual world-building—continuing their push to redefine the possibilities of K-pop and collective artistry.
