Dutch artist SPAG—formerly known as Spag Heddy—steps into a defining new chapter with the release of his upcoming EP This Is: Spag, arriving Friday, May 1 on Kannibalen Records.
Packed with four high-impact cuts, the project wastes no time establishing its intent. It opens with “MESSIAH,” a hard-hitting fusion of trap and dubstep that lands with immediate force. “OLD SKOOL” follows, weaving liquid textures and nostalgic basslines that nod to his earlier catalog while still pushing forward. Closing track “TREP” delivers a groovy, choppy trap bounce, rounding out the EP with a confident and dynamic introduction to the reimagined SPAG sound.
“Becoming SPAG marks a new chapter where I can step outside the pasta puns and lean into something more focused and grown, without losing the core of who I’ve always been. The visual shift reflects that too, pulling from the grit of pop punk and skate culture that I grew up with along with a raw black, white, and red collage style. It’s intentionally imperfect and human, a move away from the polished, glossy 3D look that’s taken over. Musically, this EP goes back to my roots in brostep and drumstep – built for the dancefloor, heavy and direct. I want to capture that early energy again, but reimagined for a new generation, the dubstep for kids who didn’t grow up in the golden brostep days. Same artist, just sharper, louder, and more dialed in.”
Originally from the Netherlands and now based in Barcelona, Spain, SPAG begins this next phase with a refined creative identity and a renewed focus on his sonic roots. Since first producing music in 2011, he has steadily evolved his approach to dubstep, earning recognition from leading artists including Skrillex, Subtronics, and NGHTMRE, who have championed his tracks in their live sets. That momentum translated into broader industry support from names like Excision, Zeds Dead, and Rusko, solidifying his place within the global bass music circuit.
His rise has included sold-out shows, tours alongside Zomboy and Flux Pavilion, and headline appearances at major festivals such as Lost Lands, EDC Las Vegas, and Life Is Beautiful. Beyond the stage, his music has landed on influential playlists including Spotify’s Mint and Bass Arcade, as well as Apple Music’s Festival Bangers. He has also secured high-profile sync placements with global brands like Fortnite, KFC, and Jägermeister, a rare crossover achievement within the bass music space.
With This Is: Spag, SPAG doesn’t just signal a name change—he reasserts his identity with sharper intent, channeling the raw energy of early brostep into a modern framework built for today’s dancefloors.
