Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, and SURF GANG continue building momentum around their long-awaited collaborative album with the release of “Leadbelly,” the latest single from POMPEII // UTILITY, arriving April 3 via 10k, Tan Cressida, and SURF GANG Records.
Following the project’s initial preview with “Minty // Earth,” “Leadbelly” deepens the chemistry between Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE, capturing the natural evolution of a creative relationship shaped by years of mutual respect and shared artistic language. The track leans into their introspective, coded lyricism while riding SURF GANG’s frenetic, forward-thinking production.
The album itself is structured as a double-sided release, with MIKE helming POMPEII and Earl Sweatshirt leading UTILITY. Across both halves, SURF GANG—including Harrison, evilgiane, Elipropperr, and Flea Diamonds—provide a restless, animated sonic backbone that bridges the two worlds into a unified, genre-defying statement.
Speaking with The FACE, both artists reflected on the deeper intention behind the project. “I feel obligated to put a lot into it because of the gift of getting to do this,” said Earl Sweatshirt, pointing to a sense of responsibility to the creative community they’ve cultivated.
MIKE echoed that sentiment, framing the album as part of a broader movement: “I’m starting to see everything… as part of the same movement. It’s like there’s a pot, and we’re responsible for putting things back into that pot.”

That ethos of collaboration and community-building sits at the core of POMPEII // UTILITY. Rather than a traditional joint project, the album reflects a shared cultural perspective—drawing from African and diasporic traditions where art is collective, iterative, and deeply relational. Every aspect of the release reinforces that intention, including the artwork, which features pieces by sculptor Sharif Farrag, a longtime friend of Earl Sweatshirt.
The project also represents a full-circle moment in the duo’s history. Since MIKE first emerged with his 2017 breakout MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE, the two have collaborated on standout tracks like “allstar” from weight of the world and “Sentry” from VOIR DIRE, Earl Sweatshirt’s joint project with The Alchemist. While the idea of a full-length collaboration has lingered for years, SURF GANG ultimately served as the connective force that brought the vision to life.
Beyond the album, the trio is preparing to take the project on the road. Ahead of their official Home on the Range Tour, kicking off June 9 in Riverside, they have teased a series of intimate, secret shows in Los Angeles, New York City, and London. The full tour will span 26 U.S. dates with support from many of the album’s collaborators before heading to Europe.
In addition, MIKE and Earl Sweatshirt will bring the project to Australia and New Zealand this May, including a performance at the iconic Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE Festival.
With “Leadbelly” setting the tone, POMPEII // UTILITY is shaping up to be more than just a collaborative release—it’s a statement on artistic kinship, community, and the evolving language of underground hip-hop. Tickets are on sale here and the flier below details the full touring schedule.
