Ontario punk outfit Plz Respond return with their latest single “Budgets & Bootstraps,” a fast, furious, and unfiltered critique of economic inequality and the systems that sustain it. Written by frontman Galen Crampsey, produced by Logan Treaty, and mastered by Johnny Ross, the track stands as one of the most direct political statements to emerge from the Ontario punk scene in recent memory.
From the opening seconds, “Budgets & Bootstraps” hits with relentless energy. Built on driving guitars and a no-holds-barred vocal delivery, the song takes aim at the dismissive rhetoric often directed at working-class struggles—reducing systemic issues like rising rent, soaring grocery prices, and stagnant wages to hollow advice about budgeting and personal responsibility. The chorus lands with force, repeating its central frustration like a rallying cry, while the bridge transforms into a chant that feels tailor-made for packed, sweat-soaked venues.
The band doesn’t shy away from the real-world frustrations fueling the track. Referencing corporate bailouts, rising costs of living, and labor struggles across Canada, Plz Respond channel a collective sense of exhaustion into something raw and confrontational. It’s a song that refuses to sugarcoat reality, instead amplifying the voices of those who feel increasingly unheard.
Comprised of Galen Crampsey (drums, piano/keys, lead vocals), Bryan Crouch (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Brandon Smith (lead guitar, backing vocals), and David Bunn (bass, backing vocals), the band has emerged from Oshawa with a sound rooted in urgency and authenticity. Drawing influence from acts like The Orwells and Sam Fender, their music blends gritty ‘90s-inspired textures with modern, working-class storytelling.
Their reputation has been built not just on recordings, but on the stage—playing venues such as The Biltmore Theatre and Bovine Sex Club, and sharing lineups with artists including IllScarlett. Beyond music, Plz Respond have also aligned their work with community efforts, raising funds for organizations like the Durham Rape Crisis Centre and the AIDS Committee of Durham Region.
As the fourth release in a growing run of singles, “Budgets & Bootstraps” marks the band’s most focused and urgent statement to date. Loud, confrontational, and rooted in lived experience, it reinforces Plz Respond’s belief that rock music should speak directly to the realities of the working class—and say the things others won’t.
