Sparklmami Enlists Mndsgn for Breakbeat Rework of “running”

Chicago multidisciplinary artist Sparklmami revisits her 2024 single “running” with a vibrant new remix from LA producer and beatmaker Mndsgn. The rework flips the track’s intricate jazz undercurrent into a buoyant breakbeat groove, injecting fresh momentum into a song already rich with emotional nuance.

The remix arrives as part of a three-version bundle of “running,” which also includes a reissue of Sparklmami’s original recording and a live rendition captured during an intimate Chicago session with her close-knit band. The live version features Eddie Burns (drums), Josh Jessen (keys/synth), William Corduroy (bass), Alec Trickett (percussion), and Kenneth Leftridge (sax), offering a raw, collaborative interpretation that highlights the song’s elasticity.

Originally released as the second half of a defining 2024 double introduction—following the acclaimed single “fajas”—“running” solidified Sparklmami’s artistic voice and exploratory performance style, which she showcased in an Elevator Music session that same year.

Speaking on the meaning behind the song, Sparklmami shares:

“‘running’ is acknowledging the silence that exists within elite or institutional spaces that I’ve somehow managed to enter. It’s about performing, code-switching, fitting in—while carrying everything it took to get there. Processing the past and the present in real time, and trying to quiet imposter syndrome along the way.”

For Mndsgn, the remix offered an opportunity to amplify the track’s movement and energy:

“It was a pleasure and honor to rework a tune that already had such an ill groove. This version made me feel like Sonic running through different levels trying to retrieve clarity in these times.”

The original release of “running” was accompanied by a self-directed video that leaned into Sparklmami’s visual art practice. A BFA graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, she has previously constructed dioramas of her childhood home and inserted herself into the telenovelas she grew up watching—embracing unpredictability as a creative tool. That same ethos carries through the video’s surreal animation, saturated colors, and playful visual storytelling.

The “running” bundle arrives ahead of Sparklmami joining Rio Kosta on tour for Texas and California dates this March, signaling another chapter in her evolving creative journey.

The “running” Mndsgn remix and full bundle are available now. Stay tuned for more from Sparklmami soon.
