France has taken a landmark step in acknowledging the cultural weight of electronic music by officially adding it to the country’s national Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a move that lays the groundwork for a future UNESCO submission. As reported by Le Figaro, the decision traces nearly a century of innovation, from the invention of the Ondes Martenot in 1928 to the worldwide influence of the French Touch, shaped by artists such as Air, Cassius, Daft Punk, and Justice, while recognizing Jean-Michel Jarre as a foundational figure in the movement.
The designation frames electronic music as a living, evolving cultural practice that has helped define France’s artistic identity across generations. Jean-Michel Jarre’s 1976 breakthrough album Oxygène played a pivotal role in bringing electronic music to a global audience, and his long-standing work as a UNESCO Ambassador has positioned him as one of the genre’s most vocal advocates on the world stage. On November 1, Jarre further reinforced that connection with a large-scale performance at Registan Square in Samarkand, presented during UNESCO’s 43rd General Conference.
Responding to the announcement, Jarre stated, “I’m glad to see that electronic music is finally taking its place within world heritage, especially after more than three decades of commitment as a UNESCO Ambassador and spokesperson for intangible culture.”
Beyond the formal recognition, the inscription underscores electronic music’s lasting artistic, social, and historical impact. Over the past five decades, Jean-Michel Jarre has continually pushed the boundaries of electronic sound and monumental performance, staging iconic concerts at culturally significant and UNESCO World Heritage locations including the Pyramids of Giza, the Forbidden City, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, Masada, Pompeii, and most recently, Samarkand. With this recognition, France affirms electronic music not only as a genre, but as an enduring cultural force woven into its national heritage.
