Following the preview release of “Devotion”, internationally acclaimed artist Montell Fish presents his latest project under his dj gummy bear persona: the new mixtape The Spirit Still Remains (Purgatory). The release embodies the freedom and experimentation of the dj gummy bear moniker, offering a sandbox for Montell to explore electronic, house, and ambient soundscapes without the expectations attached to his Montell Fish identity.
The mixtape’s title reflects liminality and transition. Montell Fish explains: “‘Purgatory’ refers to the space in between, the liminal, the state of limbo someone feels when going through transitionary periods, or when someone is stuck between heaven and hell in a religion. Both feelings are what I want this mixtape to represent. It’s the place where dj gummy bear lives as this moniker allows me to explore those in-between moments and sounds, without judgement.”
The Spirit Still Remains (Purgatory) features the latest single “Ostentatious”, a shimmering dance track with rising British artist John Glacier. Montell’s airy, tender vocals merge seamlessly with Glacier’s smooth rap delivery, accompanied by a haunting video directed by Jared Hogan, capturing the remnants of a party at the end of the night.
The mixtape release is celebrated with a hybrid live/DJ performance and surprise guests at an undisclosed Los Angeles location, streamed live via Montell’s YouTube and Instagram channels.
2025 has seen Montell experiment across genres—from dance tracks like “i saw you in my dream” and trap collaborations like “Same Shit” with Murda Beatz and BKTHERULA, to intimate acoustic offerings like Days Are Getting Shorter.
