Los Angeles-based independent label StrataSonic continues its evolution with the release of Breather, a two-track exploration by the enigmatic artist ANiML. Expanding the label’s sonic repertoire, Breather introduces a crackling fusion of trip-hop and downtempo influences reminiscent of iconic acts like DJ Shadow and Portishead.
Featuring the tracks “Breather” and “Bruv,” the release showcases sophisticated yet hallucinogenic instrumentation and percussion, evoking the atmosphere of upscale jazz lounges and hypnotic after-hours sessions. Despite being ANiML’s second release, the polished production hints at a wealth of experience behind the project.
The single “Breather” is accompanied by a mesmerizing video directed by RUFFMERCY, known for his work with Thom Yorke, Nirvana, and The Chemical Brothers. The video blends raw, expressive dance performances with RUFFMERCY’s signature hand-drawn animation, crafting a visual narrative that amplifies the track’s textured emotional depth.
“I love working with dancers and blending their movements with animation,” says RUFFMERCY. “This track immediately resonated with me, and collaborating with StrataSonic’s Creative Director Jesse Rogg made the process seamless. Their shared passion for standout music videos really brought this project to life.”
Breather is the prelude to a larger project by ANiML, set for release in early 2025. This forthcoming body of work promises vinyl editions, additional videos, and exclusive extras, reinforcing ANiML as a living art organism that challenges traditional notions of sound and identity.
Breather is available now via StrataSonic, providing a glimpse into the future of this enigmatic project and the label’s boundary-pushing vision.
