Delerium, the legendary electronic duo from Vancouver, and Clan of Xymox, the Dutch pioneers of darkwave, have joined forces for a haunting remix of In The Deep. Originally featured on Delerium’s 2023 album Signs, this version introduces a darker, immersive feel with the ethereal vocals and lyrics of KANGA, an LA-based artist.
Formed in 1987 by Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber, Delerium originated as an ambient side project within their work with electronic-industrial icons Front Line Assembly (Leeb also contributed to Skinny Puppy). Over the years, Delerium’s evolution into rich, downtempo electronic music has featured renowned collaborations and explorations into ambient, trance, and electronic pop landscapes. The Signs album, like its predecessor Mythologie (2016), was released under Metropolis Records, home to many alternative music heavyweights, including Leeb’s solo work, Model Kollapse.
The collaboration with Clan of Xymox is an ideal match for In The Deep, a song exploring the depth of loss and introspective mourning. Visual artist Tim Hill created an aquatic-themed music video that deepens the track’s dreamlike atmosphere, incorporating designs by Carylann Loepkky and Matt Lombard for an ethereal aesthetic that resonates with the track’s emotional depth.
“This is the first time we’ve worked with KANGA and Clan of Xymox, and we’re thrilled with the result,” says Leeb. “KANGA’s lyrics and performance brought a personal and hopeful edge, while Clan of Xymox introduced a darkwave depth that complements the song’s somber mood.”
Delerium, recipients of two Juno awards, are renowned for their collaborations with vocalists like Leigh Nash, Lisa Gerrard, Kirsty Hawkshaw, and Emily Haines. Their iconic track Silence with Sarah McLachlan remains one of the most influential trance hits, with the Tiësto remix recognized as one of the greatest dance tracks of all time by Mixmag readers.
