This Week’s New Music Will ‘Save Me’ When ‘I’m In A Funk’ | Fresh Music Friday

by Tanya Valencia

Nicky Romero – ‘Perception’

“Over the past years, I’ve been producing different kinds of genres within dance music. At the beginning of 2022, I went back to my roots and started to try out producing more groovy and housey tracks. When I could play Ultra Music Festival again this year as the first major festival after two years, I wanted to drop ‘Pressure’, ‘Lose My Mind’ and ‘Work My Body’ to see the main stage crowd’s reaction. The reception of these three tracks was truly amazing, so I couldn’t wait to go back to the studio to work on more music, and this is when I produced ‘Hear Me Now’, which perfectly concludes the ‘Perception’ EP.”

Pig&Dan – ‘Rock You All Night’

“Our focus has always been about pushing the sonic envelope and spreading our musical wings out as far as possible. We both share the fact that we lived in the United States in the ‘70s and had huge influences from this era in particular. This EP [‘Rock You All Night’] resonates deeply with our upbringing and very much reflects our artistic versatility. We’re responsible for assisting people to momentarily let go and try to leave the day to day grind behind, whilst getting lost in our music.”

Franc Moody – ‘I’m In A Funk’

“[‘I’m In A Funk’] was a song born in the heart of lockdown when we had to write remotely, sending bits of music to each other. The vocal we wanted to be a three-piece harmony, inspired by RnB groups like TLC. Lyrically we channeled the collective feelings of the time, being cooped up, unable to see loved ones and unable to do the things we’d normally do. As the song came together, the production began to naturally lean towards hip-hop breaks of the ‘90s and folks like LCD Soundsystem and of course Prince.”

Fonzerelli – ‘Silent Dreams & Misguided Stories’

When Aaron ‘Fonzerelli’ McClelland makes LPs, he’s not a man to do things by halves. Latterly, neither is he in the habit of keeping you waiting for them either. Two years to the month since his 20-track-strong ‘Transcend’ complement arrived, the Northern Irish born-and-based producer is back, with an album full of ‘Silent Dreams & Misguided Stories’ which blends hybrid styles of electronic music from 80’s inspired synthwave and Indie dance to Progressive Trance and beyond.

Kryder – ‘Piece Of Art (Jay Robinson Remix)’

Armed with an edgy and inimitable production aesthetic, British up-and-comer Jay Robinson turns his hand to Kryder’s 2021 hit ‘Piece Of Art‘. The Toxic Avenger – ‘Carbone Toxique’

“I worked on this EP [‘Carbone Toxique’] as I would have worked on an Original Film Strip, as Mathieu Bablet’s Comic Strip is so cinematic. The heroes travel, so I tried to make the listener of this soundtrack travel. I composed the soundtrack for this adventure by transcribing as best I could Mathieu’s desires, and his vision of things. A vision, I believe, is both disembodied and ultimately teeming with life.”

Robot Koch – ‘The Next Billion Years (Foam And Sand Reworks)’

The Next Billion Years (Foam And Sand Reworks)’, is as musically as it is philosophically ambitious as the original piece. They changed the lyrics to Italian and ‘Non Chiamarmi Mai’ was born. And I’m really happy about how the collaboration turned out, I think it works well.”

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – ‘The Sleeper’

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’The Sleeper’ features heartrending piano and lyrics that are delivered, naked and raw, with conviction. The instrumental breakdown is reminiscent of ‘90s gospel and R&B; soulful yet hazy, and incredibly apologetic. Recorded when Orlando was younger, ‘The Sleeper’ was originally viewed as what he recalls as a ‘love’ song. After many years of growth, looking back he realizes the track is something entirely different, a cry for help for someone feeling undeserving of love.

Marvel Years – ‘Have A Cigar’

The two-track EP, ‘Have A Cigar’ sees Marvel Years recontextualize an iconic record that soundtracked his adolescence – through both a collaborative cover alongside venerable musicians, as well as a self-produced remix.
