Marcus James and Danni Carra return to the release radar with their first sonic offering of the year, ‘Make Me Sad’. The highly-anticipated track follows up James’ 4-track ‘Warning Sign’ EP from last year, in addition to Carra and Late June’s ‘Already Know’ from earlier last month. It also serves as the first lead single off of James’ forthcoming EP. Out now via Physical Presents, ‘Make Me Sad’ is available to listen to across all streaming platforms.
The energetic track begins with a quick, muffled recording of a call, detailing the troubles and worries one is experiencing. Carra’s vocal enters the space, taking front-and-center by commanding the listener’s attention with each passing second. The captivating lyricism and future bass flair serve as prime accompaniments to one another, in turn producing a feelgood electronic dance music gem that effortlessly taps into one’s emotions with an astute ease. The tune’s larger-than-life drops, rolling basslines, propulsive ambiance, touching message, and rapturously delightful production sensibilities characterize the majority of the sprightly release, a perfect addition to the Physical Presents imprint.
“I had this demo sitting on my computer called ‘makemesad’ that I wrote one afternoon a few years back when someone was making me sad… big surprise. I sent it to Danni and she perfectly captured the mood of the instrumental with her lyrics, and our working title stuck. Working with her came super naturally, we’re definitely two birds of a feather. Plainly said, this is a song about having feelings for someone who isn’t making you feel too good. We’ve all had to kiss a few frogs before we find a prince or princess.”– Marcus James

Marcus often tackles stigmatized subject matter, bringing to light the depths of loneliness, anxiety and depression and how we try to cope with such heavy matters. His artistic dialogue with mental health encourages listeners to be vulnerable and to never shy away from having discourse about these sensitive themes.
“For me, this song came together really quickly. I wrote the initial melodies over a demo Marcus sent me that was titled ‘makemesad’ and I knew right away that I wanted to keep that feeling and song name as my basis for inspiration. Around the time he sent me the demo, I felt like I was in emotional limbo with someone I had feelings for. There was a lot of uncertainty about what we were, what we were doing and where we would go even though we clearly knew how we both felt for one another. So, even though parts of the limbo ‘make me sad’, the uncertainty felt worth more than any ‘wrongs’ that felt right.”– Danni Carra
