Buku Festival 2020 Brings Dynamic Music to New Orleans

by The Freaks - Staff

Escape to New Orleans and find sanctuary at Buku Music Festival + Art Project. The two-day fest is kicking off the spring festival season on March 21st and 22nd. This year Buku is offering an amazingly diverse lineup and interactive art scene.

There’s something for everyone this year at Buku. Tyler the Creator, Flume, and Illenium are set to headline the festival. My jaw dropped as I scanned the lineup, most notably for Glass Animals. The four-piece psychedelic band blew up overnight in 2014 with their hit single, “Gooey“. The band has been taking time off since 2018 after their drummer, Joe, was hit by a truck and suffered a fractured skull. He had to re-learn how to walk, talk, eat and… play the drums! Now that Joe has recovered, Glass Animals is back! I can’t wait to see what they’ve been working on. Don’t miss their set!

If you’re looking to dance out some frustration, catch Pussy Riot. The Russian feminist Punk group is well known for their politically driven songs and protests. Keep your heart rate up after Pussy Riot with some funky Tech House by Dom Dolla.  Other notable Electronic Dance Music artists to look out for: Troy Boi, Cashmere Cat, and Kaytranada.

I had flashbacks of thick eyeliner and Hot Topic band tees when I saw Taking Back Sunday on the lineup. Teenage me lusted after lead singer Adam Lazzara’s vocals. There’s nothing wrong with taking a trip down memory lane to revisit some old music friends. Try not to get caught in the mosh pit…or do, if that’s what you’re into.

Buku promises to deliver a safe and inclusive environment for its artists, performers, and festival-goers. Make the trip to New Orleans and get lost in the enriching culture and vibe that Buku has to offer. You won’t regret it!
