Hailing from Kelowna, Canada, STUND has been slaying the studio creating crispy house beats and powerful basslines. STUND’s sound is a masterful fusion of Hip-Hop, Deep Bass, and Tech House which he blends into heavy-hitting, yet electrifying tracks that will leave you begging for more. I had the pleasure of sitting down with and got to know STUND as he continues to rise to the top in the West Coast House scene.
Ben Stunden aka STUND’s passion for DJing sparked during his basketball career at Grand Prairie Regional College, where he asked for (and I quote) “a piece of sh!t DJ controller for Christmas,” to spin after his winning basketball games in 2012. Soon leaving to play ball at the University of Lethbridge, Stunden continued his pursuit by throwing events at the Uni- which unfortunately had little success. Though this did not deter him, if anything, it sparked his desire more. After getting the chance to open for SkiiTour in 2015, he came to the realization that to play better shows, he had better learn how to make music.
“Literally the next day, I downloaded Ableton and did all the tutorials. I watched thousands of hours of Youtube videos and then the rest is history. It’s really all just hard work and believing in yourself. Be stubborn with your dream, everybody wants you to fail. Don’t let that happen.”
Since then, Stunden made an impressive collection of tracks that embody his enthusiastic and upbeat personality, pulling influence from producers such as Dillon Nathaniel who encapsulates that weird Bass Tech-House sound STUND is no stranger to. Golf Clap is another huge inspiration for STUND, “Just last week one of my tracks was actually featured on their Country Club Disco Radio, which was a huge honour.” Stunden continues to produce fire with two released tracks on Los Angeles based label Perfect Driver. I asked Stunden what it was like to try and make something of themselves in this cut-throat industry, which he replied “If you’re making bad music, you should be able to tell if you’re making bad music. Your ears don’t lie to you. There’s just a moment when it just hits you and you KNOW that it’s good enough to send out to people.”
STUND continues to flourish in the scene and has recently been signed to the newly emerged Triple A Talent, a collective of music industry vets who have transformed their passion into a boutique artist management and booking agency. Catch STUND playing their inauguration show on December 13th at Celebrities Underground in Vancouver, Canada with other artists such as GREAZUS, Shiny Things, and MYNXY. If Vancouver is a bit too far, you can also see him play at Big White Ski Resort on December 8th at Snow Shoe Sam’s, alongside his fellow Rollers Only crew.
