Suwannee Hulaween is less than a week away – are you ready for the wildest Halloween adventure on the map? I’ve been preparing my costumes for each day and can’t wait to ride the incoming wave of nostalgia as a ‘90s kid appreciating the theme of “Smells Like Teen Spirit of the Suwannee”. Favorites from childhood will abound throughout the festival grounds! Anticipate lots of Disney and Nickelodeon cartoon characters and totems. Hulaween rounded-up some ubiquitous pop culture costume ideas in its announcement:
Are You Afraid of the Dark? You should be! #HulaweenFL is gonna be the Nightmare Before Christmas, and we’re ready to see your best freaks & geeks or grunge & goth as we take on the best of the 90s deep in the GUTS of Spirit Lake! Gather your Toon Squad, wipe off the Slime and Scream but, don’t forget… it’s all just a bunch of Hocus Pocus, so run Forest, run.
If you’re going with other costume inspirations but still want to participate in the theme, collect some VHS tapes, silly CDs, old toys and whatever remnants from 20+ years ago you don’t need – yet can’t bring yourself to just throw away – and wager them for glorious crap at the redonkulous Frick Frack Blackjack! This is where you place bets with virtually anything (besides money) and the staff will match your bet with something(s) suitable from the stockade of items they’ve won at various festivals.
Frick Frack proves to be one of the wildest, most entertaining diversions at any event it’s a part of, and is expanding into a larger casino concept to also include street dice, roulette and carnival games at Hulaween. If you think ground scores and heady trades are cool, wait till you win some rare oddities and strange delights at Frick Frack. Don’t worry if you aren’t the gambling type – there will also be a trading post with far more enticing things up for trade than that wook who will stumble into your campsite at lunchtime.
Hula is also noteworthy for being such a distinct cross-section of jam bands and EDM. So whether you already swim all over this pool or are only dipping your toes into the other side, check out the schedule below and start planning out your days. I’ve included my daily recommendations to help you navigate these genre currents. The String Cheese Incident hosts this festival, so they play quite a lot – and there’s no better place to get lost in several of their sets and EMBRACE THE CHEESE! You can also discover some righteous renegades late at night as well, so ask around and make sure to follow the tunes through the campgrounds to whatever catches your ear.
Suwannee Hulaween takes place October 24-27 in Live Oak, FL. Tickets are still available here, with 3-day GA passes starting at $319.79 after tax and 4-day passes starting at $408.69 after tax.
