LP Giobbi is ‘Ready To Go’. Are You? | Interview

by The Freaks - Staff

One of the leading women in the Electronic Dance Music scene, LP Giobbi is having quite the hot streak with tons of great releases and a tour schedule that’s packed to the brim with shows. Nothing can stop LP as she climbs toward the top, showcasing her ability to shine bright as one of the most notable female DJ/producers.

LP Giobbi isn’t just a musical goddess though. She also takes pride in her educational platform, Femme House which empowers women to learn the language of the studio and overcome the gap between men and women in the industry. LP also has her own lines of blouses — GIOBBI, which is fashion fit for all wild women out there.

Most recently, LP Giobbi has released her latest single, ‘Ready To Go’ with Boom Dice — a tech-house stomper with an irresistible carnivalesque vibe that’s sure to get any dance floor moving — and it sure did when I saw LP sat Elsewhere in Brooklyn just a few weeks ago. Her other most recent accomplishment was the release of her ‘HARD Summer Mixtape’ which is a complete musical journey from heaven to hell.

When I caught LP’s show at Elsewhere, I also had the opportunity to share a few words with her; talking about her many ventures throughout her career and so much more.

FMF: I really enjoyed your show at Elsewhere in Brooklyn the other night. You really have a unique sound and your music is very soulful. How do you come up with the ideas for your productions when you get into the studio?

LP Giobbi: I usually start with a vocal sample or piano hook that I have stored in a session full of piano improv ideas collected each day on my piano while practicing. When I find a riff that feels good, I think about where in my set it should be. I like my set to feel like a journey, so I wonder if the track will gently draw them in at the beginning, hit them in the face near the end, or be somewhere in between.

As a female artist in the same music industry, you are doing your part with your educational platform Femme House. What do you think is most important in fostering the empowerment of women trying to get into this industry?

I think visual representation and mentorship are key. If you can see it, you can imagine yourself doing it and if you can imagine yourself in that role then you can be in that role. I try to put myself in as many gatekeeper roles as possible in order to put on those less represented. The role of producer and booker are both gatekeeper roles. As a producer, I try to work with as many women and under-represented communities as possible. As North American Music Director for W Hotels, I book as many women for our music series and hire as many female engineers as I can. With Femme House, mentorship comes into play as it is a direct peer-to-peer educational workshop series to teach women how to engineer and produce music.

You’re clearly very fashion forward and you always have the best outfits. You also have your own clothing line. What inspired you to begin that venture?

I found this wild blouse at a thrift-store and loved wearing it with its big shoulder pads. It made me feel feminine yet slightly masculine at the same time and when I’m DJing I like to bring in both energies. So I decided to create more of them to wear.

You’ve released a couple great singles this year already. What else can we expect from you in 2019?

You can expect many more tunes! I will be releasing close to a song a month through the end of the year, continuing to grow Femme House and working on Animal Talk (the touring neon jungle rave and publishing company I started with Sofi Tukker).

Lately, you’ve been performing all over the place. If fans want to see you, where else can they catch you this year?

In August I’ll be playing Animal Talk parties in Toronto, Montreal, and Chicago as well as HARD Summer, St. Barth Summer Vibes Festival, and Burning Man. Then I’m touring with Sofi Tukker in America and Europe from October to December.

LP Giobbi has put together her own mixtape for the official mixtape series of HARD Summer Music Festival.
