This past Independence Day weekend, the infamous Cityfox Experience returned to NYC’s most hip venue, the Brooklyn Mirage. Having taken place on Saturday, July 6th, Cityfox is known for its diverse techno lineup as well as its massive production. This multi-room event showcased some of the best up and coming talents as well as many familiar names in the techno scene.
Being my fourth Cityfox event this year, I was curious to see how the minds behind this event would outdo themselves. This is my favorite techno event within the United States and I walked into this with very high standards. Luckily for me, Cityfox simply delivered as always.
10 + hours of techno goodness!
This outstanding outdoor techno party went from 6:00 pm until 4:30 am. Arriving at the venue early was important for me, so I could check out some new talent. Doing a quick run-through of the production, it was pretty clear a lot of love went into some very noticeable upgrades. The most notable one being the remodeling of the village area. This space is meant for small intimate performances. While it was a small space, I felt the creativity of the stage design was simply amazing. Covering all of the wall space was multi-colored LED lights that were changing constantly and there was a fog machine above the DJ booth to add to the atmosphere. This stage is a perfect example where creativity made this stage. It didn’t need flashing strobe lights or massive LED screens to make it stand out.
I walked into the King’s Hall when the duo Henry Saiz and Edu Imbernon began their set. This set was filled with so many classics and goodies. Personally, I haven’t heard of these two artists and I was blown away with how consistent the flow of their set was and how they were able to feed off the crowd’s energy and hit us with some great tracks. The first noticeable track that was played within the set was ‘The Sound Of Violence’ by Cassius — a great tune and a small tribute to one half of Cassius, the late and great Philippe Zdar. The clock hit 11:30 pm and these musical geniuses dropped ‘New Sky’ by Rüfüs Du Sol. The beat began to build up, the lights began to brighten up the room and everyone held their hands high in the air. A picture perfect moment had just occurred, which was truly a highlight of the night. As we reached the end of this set, the pair dropped ‘Revolver’ by Dalfie, this track is a techno dance floor destroyer. It was the perfect way to close the set. Big ups to the duo for playing such a great set regardless of it being early in the night.
Room to room, Cityfox is filled with the best talents.
Next up was ANNA, who was taking over the main stage. I was curious to see her and see what all the hype was about. Admittedly, it took me a moment to get into this set, but in a few moments time, she played the trance classic ‘Simulated’ by Marco V and my attention was fully in her grasp. I loved the fact that she mixed it up and blended multiple genres into her set. It gave me that feeling of familiarity, while still keeping it fresh.
Two hours flew by and the summer vibe really began to kick in. It was time for Maceo Plex to take the stage and begin his extended closing set. I truly loved this set from start to finish. Maceo Plex played that groovy sound that I love so much. He was clearly enjoying himself showing us his best dance moves on stage, playing remixes of classic tracks like Faithless, ‘Insomnia’ and a personal favorite, Maceo Plex’s own production ‘Solar Detroit’. As the fire began to rise from the flamethrowers on stage, so did the crowd’s energy. The night came to an end with a short, but special back to back set of Maceo Plex and ANNA.
Another one in the books, but we’re not stopping there.
The Brooklyn Mirage is simply the best venue in NYC and Cityfox Experience is at the top of my list of techno parties. The combination of the two is perfect. All I have to say is that you need to get to these Cityfox events early and explore. If you’re a techno-head, Cityfox should be on your bucket list.
