If there is anyone you need to keep your eyes on right now, it’s EJ! This masked DJ and producer is the resident DJ for Formula E and is one of the most recent talents on Armin van Buuren’s label, Armada Music.
EJ might be one of the most mysterious DJs out there, but it’s no mystery that his music brings a sound that light up the dance floor like the Formula E cars light up the race track! Having received support from the likes of Oliver Heldens, Gareth Emery, Thomas Gold, Benny Benassi, Cedric Gervais, Sander van Doorn and Armin van Buuren; EJ is on the fast track towards stardom.
Recently, I was able to have a few words with this mysterious young artist and asked him some questions that brought about some intriguing answers.
FMF: Being the resident DJ for Formula E sounds very exciting. What is it like to perform at those races?
EJ: It’s electric – pardon the pun! I am really lucky with what I do. Resident DJ to the most exciting motorsport on the planet. Travelling the world to incredible cities, playing in front of thousands of people. Fast cars, hot chicks, exotic locations! What’s not to love!!
We’re certainly glad that you’re doing what you do now. But, if you hadn’t gotten into DJing and producing, what career path would you have taken?
I reckon I would have been a chef. I once entered into the UK Masterchef to see how I could do. I got to the final audition stages so was pretty happy with that. Of course, if I had made it on TV, I would have won!
You’ve been coming out with a lot of hot tracks these past few years. When you get into the studio, where does your mind go and how do you get inspired to make new music?
It really depends, sometimes I can just get this crazy melody in my head and other times a vocal will inspire me, or my peers at Garuda will. I love producing and hope to finish some more original tracks and remixes soon, but I’ve been travelling everywhere from Santiago to Paris with Formula E and it’s also important to spend as much time with my family as I can when I’m back in London – but trust me, I have some irons in fires and some new music will be coming soon. You can follow my social media channels to keep up to date.
Your music is definitely on the trancier side and I always ask trance producers this question because they all have a different answer. What does trance mean to you?
I like to think I also play a lot of the deeper, more progressive elements too, but for me it’s all electronic dance music. You want dance music to lift you up and that’s what I always aim for no matter the genre.
Your entire image is based on racing and vehicle references, so you must enjoy cars and racing yourself. What is your favorite brand of car and what has been your favorite race that you’ve performed at?
I have always been a sucker for a Porsche, so you can imagine I am super excited that they are joining the championship next season. Who knows, maybe they will give me one! Favourite race has to be Mexico. I played on the main stage to 20,000 screaming fans after the race. It was pretty special!
You’ve already performed at some incredible events and venues like Ultra Europe, Eden Ibiza and many more. Where can we catch a set by you this year?
You can keep up to date on my social media pages for when the shows roll out, but I also have a very special announcement for my fans coming soon. Keep your eyes peeled!
You had a great year in 2018 with several amazing new records. What do you have in store for us in 2019?
I’m currently working on a remix of a major band that I can’t wait to share. I am really excited and the tune is sounding awesome. There are quite a few original EJ tracks almost ready as well. Some in my recognized style, the others much more progressive. ‘Formula E: The Soundtrack, Vol. 2’ will be out before the start of season 6 and I am working on my own artist album. All of that, alongside some really exciting shows. Bring it on!
