A new independent electronic music label is taking a different approach to artist development. Founded by Guy Tolhurst and Grant Nichols of Nichols+Roark, SHIFT officially launches in October with a model focused on building artists’ careers rather than chasing individual tracks. Alongside its inaugural Season 1 roster, the label will introduce its sound through the debut compilation Transmissions 001 and celebrate its launch with an event during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).
Built around the principle “artist-first, not track-first,” SHIFT aims to address an increasingly transactional music industry, where short release cycles and crowded demo inboxes can leave artists struggling to find meaningful support. Instead of signing a track and then working out how to develop the artist behind it, the label begins with the artist, investing time, resources, and industry connections into creating sustained momentum.
“Labels are overwhelmed, artists are being ghosted, and the whole dynamic has become too transactional. Constantly sending music into a black hole isn’t good for anyone – creatively or mentally – and we didn’t want to build another label that replicated a model we already knew was broken,” says Guy Tolhurst.
For its first season, SHIFT has signed seven artists: Cristina Tosio, Leena Punks, N1NJA, Seizmic, Sonickraft, TIMANTI, and Willis. The roster will release music individually and collectively, with opportunities to collaborate, remix one another, perform at label events and external shows, and connect through the wider network being developed around the label.

The approach is deliberately curated, with no open demo inbox. By concentrating on a defined group of artists each season, SHIFT intends to give each member more focused attention while building opportunities for the roster as a whole. Artists can continue working with their existing management and releasing music through other labels, allowing SHIFT to support their development without restricting their wider careers.
“Artists shouldn’t have to become label owners just to release music consistently. By keeping our roster deliberately curated, we can give every artist real attention, build momentum around their music and let them focus on what they do best,” says Grant Nichols.
The label’s first collective release, Transmissions 001, arrives October 16. Curated by Nichols+Roark, the debut various-artists compilation features Sonickraft, Nichols+Roark, Seizmic, N1NJA, and Willis. The project introduces the musical identity of SHIFT while bringing several Season 1 artists together on a shared release. It also serves as an early example of the label’s wider philosophy, creating a platform for individual artists while strengthening connections across the collective.
The next milestone comes during Amsterdam Dance Event, when SHIFT hosts its official launch event at The Crane Faralda in Amsterdam on Thursday, October 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lineup brings together members of the label’s roster and international guests, including Volkoder from Brazil, Cristina Tosio from Spain, Human Rias from Germany, Julian Prince from Canada, Leena Punks from the United Kingdom, N1NJA, Nichols+Roark, Seizmic, Sonickraft, TIMANTI, and Willis, also representing the United Kingdom.

The event will serve as the label’s first major international gathering, bringing its artists, founders, and wider network together through performances and industry connections. More than a launch party, it represents a physical extension of SHIFT’s model, where collaboration and community are intended to play a central role in long-term artist development.
For Tolhurst and Nichols, the broader ambition is to build an independent music company that offers an alternative to the industry’s focus on individual releases. By connecting music, events, collaborations, and professional opportunities, SHIFT aims to create an ecosystem that supports artists beyond a single track or release cycle.
With Transmissions 001 arriving October 16 and the official launch event following at The Crane Faralda on October 22, SHIFT is beginning its first season with a clear mission: to put artists at the centre of the label model and build lasting careers around the music.
