Electronic music powerhouses Seven Lions and Kill The Noise reunite for “I Need,” their eighth collaboration and second release together on Monstercat. Arriving August 28, the track revisits the melodic intensity of their first collaboration, “Cold Hearted,” while bringing nearly a decade of creative evolution into a fresh, modern production.
First released through Monstercat in 2017, “Cold Hearted” quickly became a fan favorite and established the chemistry between the two producers. “I Need” intentionally returns to that formula, pairing soaring melodic passages with crushing drops and high-energy bass production. The result captures the emotional weight of their earlier work while giving it a sharper contemporary edge.
“We did start out with the intention of making ‘Cold Hearted’ part two, so we knew it was going to be melodic and kind of heavy,” says Seven Lions. “So it was pretty intentional.”
For Kill The Noise, the process meant looking backward to understand what made their original collaboration work in the first place.
“During the making of ‘I Need’ I was trying to remember what my thought process was when we made ‘Cold Hearted’ back in 2017 and trying to figure out how I get back to that,” says Kill The Noise. “‘I Need’ ended up actually being in the neighborhood of ‘Cold Hearted’ but modernized to some level.”
The partnership between Seven Lions and Kill The Noise dates back to their time after signing with OWSLA, where their shared interest in melodic songwriting and forward-thinking bass music laid the foundation for a collaboration that has remained active for nearly a decade.
Their complementary strengths have been central to that chemistry. While Seven Lions brings his melodic instincts and songwriting approach, Kill The Noise contributes a deep expertise in sound design and production.
“I think that’s how ‘Cold Hearted’ turned out so well too, because we both did what we were best at,” says Seven Lions. “I think that’s what we’re good at with the collabs too. If I’m not good at something, I know Jake (Kill The Noise) is really good at it, like sound design, and on the flip side Jake will let me write the melodies.”
“I Need” arrives during a particularly significant period for Seven Lions, following the release of his acclaimed album Asleep in the Garden of Infernal Stars and companion EP The Dreams Strange and Eternal. The projects earned widespread recognition, including Album of the Year honors from Dancing Astronaut and Best Album at the EDM Awards.
The producer will continue that ambitious creative run in September with Opus Harmonia, a one-night-only collaboration with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall on September 25. The performance represents another expansion of Seven Lions’ musical world, bringing his electronic compositions into a live orchestral setting.
The collaboration between Monstercat and Ophelia will also take the pair’s music to Europe in October for two major events. On October 16, Monstercat x Ophelia will take over Ministry of Sound in London, featuring Seven Lions b2b Trivecta, Kill The Noise, MUZZ, Murdock, Syn LDN, and more.
The showcase then heads to Amsterdam Dance Event on October 22, with a lineup featuring [IVY], Anton Invicta, DJ Mii, Fairlane, Gammer, Going Quantum, Kompany, MUZZ, NGHTMRE, Oliverse, PIRAPUS, Seven Lions, Tape B, and Trivecta.
With “I Need,” Seven Lions and Kill The Noise prove that revisiting the past does not necessarily mean recreating it. By using “Cold Hearted” as a creative reference point rather than a blueprint, the longtime collaborators combine their established melodic and bass-driven chemistry with nearly a decade of production evolution, delivering a track that feels familiar without being stuck in 2017.
