After five years away from new music, Ghostemane has officially returned with “Zero Day,” marking the extreme music artist’s first new release since 2021. Produced by Ghostemane and longtime collaborator Kenneth Blume, the track arrives alongside a new music video directed by Quiet Cam, filmed entirely during two surprise performances that marked Ghostemane’s first headline shows in half a decade.
The unexpected return began on August 5 in Austin, Texas, where Ghostemane performed inside an abandoned tunnel network. The following night, on August 6, he brought the surprise show to an underground warehouse in Houston, Texas. The raw environments provided the backdrop for the visual accompanying “Zero Day,” capturing the intensity and underground atmosphere surrounding his return to the stage.
The new track reunites Ghostemane with Kenneth Blume, who previously collaborated with the artist on “Sacrilege,” from his acclaimed 2020 album ANTI-ICON. “Zero Day” arrives as the latest chapter in a catalog that has consistently blurred the boundaries between industrial music, hardcore, hip-hop, metal and experimental electronic production.
The release follows Ghostemane’s 2021 EP Fear Network II and his most recent full-length project, ANTI-ICON. Released in 2020, the album earned widespread critical acclaim for its collision of aggressive metal and hardcore textures with hip-hop rhythms and industrial production.
Rolling Stone praised ANTI-ICON for its ability to move between “full-throated screams” and rapid-fire rap performances, while Pitchfork described the project as a significant step forward for the artist. The album also received acclaim from Stereogum, Revolver, NME and Alternative Press, further cementing Ghostemane’s position as one of the most distinctive artists operating between extreme music and alternative hip-hop.
Born Eric Ghoste, the artist has released music under the Ghostemane name since 2014, developing a singular sound that draws from a wide range of influences. Industrial, hardcore, acoustic music, Southern phonk rap, ambient and experimental styles have all played a role in his evolution, with each project expanding the boundaries of his musical identity.
That willingness to move between genres has become central to Ghostemane’s artistic approach. Over the past decade, he has continued to develop not only as a producer and songwriter but also as a performer, combining abrasive sound design, unconventional arrangements and intensely physical live performances into a world distinctly his own.
“Zero Day” now opens the door to the next phase of that evolution, arriving after a five-year stretch without new music and immediately paired with Ghostemane’s return to the stage.
With the surprise Austin and Houston performances now behind him and “Zero Day” officially out worldwide, Ghostemane has made it clear that his next chapter is underway. More new music is expected to follow.
