Matt Lange Channels Personal Resilience on New Album RECOVERY

Acclaimed solo artist, producer, remixer, composer, and film scorer Matt Lange is set to release his deeply personal new album, RECOVERY, on August 13, 2026. Blending original compositions with emotionally charged reinterpretations of songs by Nine Inch Nails, Sleep Token, Mazzy Star, Failure, and Emma Ruth Rundle, the project serves as both an artistic statement and an autobiographical reflection on healing through adversity.

Mixed entirely in Dolby Atmos, RECOVERY delivers an immersive listening experience that highlights Lange’s meticulous production style and cinematic approach to sound design. The album’s expansive sonic landscape enhances every performance, drawing listeners into a collection that balances vulnerability, atmosphere, and emotional intensity.

The origins of RECOVERY trace back to the COVID-19 pandemic, when Lange began singing again as a way to reconnect with his voice during one of the most difficult periods of his life. After being laid off from a leadership role at Avid, the makers of Pro Tools, navigating the end of a long-term relationship, and recovering from a serious injury, music became both an emotional outlet and a path toward rebuilding.

What began as a simple vocal exercise soon evolved into a five-year creative journey. Lange initially recorded reinterpretations of Failure’s “Another Space Song” and Sleep Token’s “Alkaline,” never expecting those recordings to become the foundation of an entire album.

As fate would have it, another difficult chapter unfolded in 2025 when Lange lost his position as Director of Brand Partnerships at Fender and suffered a torn ACL that required surgery. Rather than slowing his creative momentum, the setbacks reinforced the album’s central themes of perseverance, transformation, and renewal.

Drawing inspiration from some of his most influential artists, Lange approaches each cover with reverence while reshaping the material through his own cinematic lens. His interpretation of Nine Inch Nails’And All That Could’ve Been” retains the emotional weight of the original while introducing a raw intimacy uniquely his own. Likewise, his reimagining of Mazzy Star’sFade Into You” deepens the song’s ethereal beauty, while his version of Emma Ruth Rundle’s “Real Big Sky,” featuring longtime friend Ekaterina Gorbacheva, balances sweeping grandeur with delicate vulnerability.

Interwoven with those reinterpretations are original songs that reveal the emotional heart of RECOVERY. On “I Could, I Should,” Lange pairs softly picked arpeggios with confessional lyricism, delivering one of the album’s most intimate moments. His understated vocal performance unfolds over subtle electronic textures and unconventional percussion, creating a fragile yet powerful meditation on emotional pain and self-reflection.

How Much More Will You” continues that introspective journey through stripped-back instrumentation and heartfelt songwriting. Anchored by gently strummed chords, the track captures the uncertainty that accompanies the end of a relationship while questioning how much of life should be left to chance.

Reflecting on the song, Lange explains:

“Without even overanalyzing it, you can hear a relationship ending. These are some of the most intimate pieces I’ve ever written.”

The album concludes with “It Conspires,” an expansive and cinematic finale that encapsulates the emotional arc of the entire record. Beginning with sparse industrial textures and glitch-infused electronics, the song steadily builds into a dramatic crescendo driven by orchestral strings, pulsing synthesizers, and soaring guitars.

Discussing its significance, Lange says:

“‘It Conspires’ bookends the entire journey, and it lyrically shows a progression from the beginning to the end. It’s very existential. I was in a moment of searching for what’s next. You start to ask, ‘What’s the meaning of all this?’ After reading The Alchemist for the fourth time, I was trying to feel connected to something greater. There’s an overtly cinematic outro. I dive down this existential wormhole and make a grand exit like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Light comes out of the rubble.”

Throughout RECOVERY, Lange seamlessly merges his expertise as a producer, composer, and songwriter, crafting an album that blurs the boundaries between alternative rock, electronic music, cinematic composition, and ambient sound design. The result is a richly textured listening experience that feels equally suited for headphones, film soundtracks, and immersive audio environments.

Looking back on the project’s unexpected evolution, Lange reflects:

“I did a couple of covers just to warm up my voice. I used it as a developmental tool, but it unexpectedly hooked me in. I treated the covers as if they were my own. I had to become them, and in turn, they had to become me. The album was made out of desperation when I was still healing. I had no idea what was going to happen, and there was no end goal. I just picked out interesting songs.”

With RECOVERY, Matt Lange transforms years of personal upheaval into an emotionally resonant body of work that celebrates resilience, artistic reinvention, and the healing power of music. By pairing deeply personal originals with thoughtfully reimagined classics, he delivers his most intimate and cinematic release to date, offering listeners an honest portrait of recovery in every sense of the word.
