South African afro-tech producer Shimza and Grammy-nominated British duo CamelPhat have joined forces for their latest track, “BADO,” featuring the evocative vocals of singer-songwriter Idd Aziz. Released on September 6th via Helix Records, “BADO” marks an exciting collaboration that blends intense afro house rhythms with raw electronic synths.
“BADO” follows Shimza’s previous singles, including May’s “Parachute” featuring Rachel Chinouriri and February’s “Darling” with Aloe Blacc, which has amassed nearly 1.5 million Spotify streams. The new track masterfully combines Shimza’s vibrant afro house percussion with CamelPhat’s pulsating electronic textures. The emotive piano and Idd Aziz’s compelling vocals create a dynamic fusion of organic and electronic sounds.
Shimza, born Ashley Raphala in Tembisa, is renowned as one of South Africa’s leading afro-tech artists. His global impact is evident through collaborations with major names in dance music, such as Elderbrook, Aloe Blacc, and Louie Vega. His weekly radio show, “Kamah Kamah,” has attracted 1.8 million listeners, and his “Kunye” show brand has gained popularity across various international locations. Additionally, his annual “One Man Show” event supports underprivileged children and features top South African talent like AKA, Cassper Nyovest, and Black Coffee.
CamelPhat, the British duo comprising Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala, have established themselves as significant figures in the electronic music scene. Known for their Grammy-nominated hit “Cola,” which topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, CamelPhat released their second album, Spiritual Milk, in 2023. The album, featuring collaborations with Jake Bugg, London Grammar, and Kölsch, continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music. Their previous collaboration with Shimza, “Embers,” further solidified their dynamic presence in the genre.
Idd Aziz, the Kenyan-born vocalist of “BADO,” is celebrated for his powerful voice and multi-instrumental skills. Influenced by Lokua Kanza, Youssou N’Dour, and Ismael Lo, Idd Aziz began his career at a young age and has since performed alongside renowned artists like Angelique Kidjo and Salif Keita.
With “BADO,” Shimza continues to assert his prominence in afro-tech and afro-house, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry. Fans can expect even more exciting projects from this rising star in the future.
