Parisian techno artist, DJ, and multidisciplinary creative François X returns with his latest EP, Bound States, arriving June 19 via his own XX LAB imprint. The four-track release marks a notable evolution in his artistic trajectory, shifting away from the conceptual storytelling of previous works in favor of a more instinctive and immediate exploration of sound.
Following acclaimed XX LAB releases including CEO, Straight Edge Society, and The Skin Between Us, Bound States embraces a stripped-back philosophy rooted in presence rather than narrative. Rather than constructing elaborate conceptual frameworks, François X channels years of musical immersion into a collection that prioritizes emotional weight, physicality, and the direct experience of the dancefloor.
Opening the EP, “Bones & Harmony” establishes a warm, immersive atmosphere, gradually unfolding into a rich tapestry of melodic tension. The title track, “Bound State,” follows with hypnotic momentum, driven by rolling low-end pressure and syncopated rhythmic stabs that reinforce the record’s club-focused energy. At the emotional heart of the project sits “Just A Feeling,” built around a commanding Reese bassline and meticulously sculpted percussion. Drawing inspiration from Detroit techno, Chicago house, and contemporary European club music, the track encapsulates François X’s signature balance of groove, depth, and restraint. Closing cut “Type X” delivers the EP’s most immediate statement, combining direct melodic hooks with powerful rhythmic energy designed for maximum collective impact on the dancefloor.
Describing the project, François X calls Bound States “a series of states, fully formed, fully lived, where years of immersion have dissolved into instinct.” The EP reflects a deeply internalized relationship with music, capturing the point where technical knowledge and lived experience merge into intuitive creative expression shaped by decades immersed in club culture.
At its foundation, the record pays tribute to the emotional richness of Black American dance music, embracing the communal spirit of house, techno, and soul while pairing it with the structural precision and architectural sensibility of European club culture. Rather than chasing trends or reinvention, Bound States offers a refined affirmation of techno’s enduring language, emphasizing density, emotional pressure, and rhythmic sophistication over spectacle.
The visual identity continues the aesthetic established with François X’s 2022 Digital Fever EP, extending XX LAB’s evolving artistic universe. Recurring imagery and the phrase, “The luminous cowboy has no flag to carry, only being,” revisit themes introduced in earlier releases, now presented through a more grounded and introspective lens that mirrors the music itself.

Since launching XX LAB in 2021, François X has developed the platform into more than a record label, using it as a multidisciplinary space for experimental club culture, design, and audiovisual storytelling. Releases including Digital Fever, CEO (Cowboy Executive Officer), and The Skin Between Us have demonstrated his commitment to expanding techno’s artistic possibilities while remaining deeply connected to its cultural origins.
With Bound States, François X distills years of creative exploration into his most instinctive and focused work to date. The EP reinforces his position as one of contemporary techno’s most forward-thinking voices, honoring the genre’s emotional and rhythmic heritage while continuing to shape its future through understated innovation and uncompromising artistic vision.
