Every year when Valentine’s Day rolls around some of us seem to get absorbed in the corporate side of the holiday, where we splurge on sweets and an evening out with a loved one. For others, Valentine’s Day can be a reminder of our relationship dependent culture or just loneliness in general. If you resonate with the latter and will be spending the day with yourself, then grab a glass of wine (or two) and RÜFÜS DU SOL’s discography.
“Solace” is defined as “comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness” which I resonate with when it comes to this album. There’s something about it that just soothes my soul when I need it the most. The first time I heard “Treat You Better” I was fully aware that it was meant to be about people in our lives but I couldn’t help and declare it as my self-love anthem. As silly as it sounds, when I feel down I’ll put this song on and sing the words “I want your love and I want it bad. I just want to treat you better” to myself. After repeating this declaration of self-love as a mantra, I let the rest of the album play out and let my soul descend into relaxation, sometimes even paired with a bubble bath.
If I’m craving more, I’ll move on to “Bloom”. The first few tracks are a mellow ascent into one of my favorite tracks on the album, “You Were Right”. Something about the gentle melody of this track paired with a beat that I can’t help but dance to makes me smile. Like most of their music, It’s a song that brings me so much joy and movement but doesn’t require raging dance moves, which is a rare find for a basshead like me. This seems to be the effect that RÜFÜS DU SOL has on me, which is why I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a lone Valentine’s Day. I’d rather spend the night at home intoxicated by the vocals and guitar on “Hypnotised” than out on the town and then end with “Innerbloom” as a nightcap.
Whether you do end up spending Valentine’s Day alone or not, RÜFÜS DU SOL is the perfect soundtrack to curate a gentle atmosphere where love can be shared. If you’re looking to treat yourself, you can catch RÜFÜS DU SOL while they’re on the Americas Tour in a city near you!
